Brothers and Sisters Reunite at Parsons' Camp to Belong NY
Camp to Belong Provides Memories to Treasure for a Lifetime
At first glance it looked like your average summer camp for kids…
There were canoes, a rope swing, the glow of a campfire and sticky fingers caused by assembling the perfect s’more. But a closer look will show you that Camp To Belong held at Camp Chingachgook on Lake George is not your average camp. Keep looking and you realize the kids attending are not your average campers. As a matter of fact, some of them know each other very well.
The kids at Camp To Belong are siblings – brothers and sisters separated from each other by some alternative living arrangement, more often than not, the foster care system. Each group of siblings has a different story to tell. Some kids may see their sibling on a weekly basis, while others were reunited after months of separation.
The camp counselors are special as well. They run the gamut from idealistic college students studying social work to middle age professionals and volunteers who have seen it all. The common denominator is their caring for the kids and the ability to squeeze in a lot of fun, laughter and happiness into one week.
While fun is the order of the day, building and strengthening relations is not far behind. Siblings worked together rowing war canoes, encouraged each other to take just one more step higher on the rock climbing wall and shared cake at a camp wide group birthday party, complete with decorations and gifts.
When the week ended, each camper made their way home clutching a scrap book filled with pictures and remembrances of their time at Camp To Belong. They left with more than they had when they arrived. Relationships were strengthened, laughter shared and tears shed. How could it have been any better? They spent time with family.
The memories in their hearts will last far longer than the scrapbook in their arms…
